How to read this catalogue

Two of these are historical documents. Three are pictures made from one.

Plates 01 and 02 are photographic: an archival portrait, and a printed halftone reproduction with a Bengali caption. Plates 03, 04 and 05 are later works derived from the same photographic likeness — a composite, a monochrome study, and a modern commemorative graphic. They are useful, and they are not evidence about 1930.

Provenance and rights Photographic portraits of Surya Sen predate 1934 and circulate widely in publications and institutional collections; the photographers are not identified in the copies held here. Plates 03, 04 and 05 are later derivative works. Anyone able to supply verified authorship, dating or rights information for any plate is asked to get in touch, and the catalogue will be corrected.
Why this gallery is small It contains what the archive actually holds. It has not been padded with unrelated period photographs, images of other people, stock imagery, or generated pictures of historical scenes. There are no photographs here of Ganesh Ghosh, Lokenath Bal, Kalpana Datta or Pritilata Waddedar, which is why the People & Associates page identifies them typographically instead.
